What are social innovations?

A social innovation is a new idea resulting from the creative activity of an individual, a group or a community and providing added value to the well-being and health of an individual or community or the service delivery system.

Innovations in social and health care may be concerned with various issues, including legislation, services, well-being at the level of an individual or the population, and the product and service markets.

What kinds of innovations have been developed at STAKES?

STAKES has developed dozens of innovations in the 2000s.

Some examples of the innovations initiated by STAKES:

• Anticipation dialogues
• Finnish Wellbeing Center
• RAI project
• Health district
• Managing the uptake of new diagnostic and treatment methods
• Web Service for Early Childhood Education and Care (Varttua)

The National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) started operations on 1 January 2009, following the merger of STAKES and the National Public Health Institute (KTL).
